Penguins take first, beat Chix in 6

The Penguins jumped ahead to steal 1st place in the league by defeating the Chix 24-14 in 6 innings.  Consistent hitting from the Penguins proved to be the difference as solid contact was made in almost every at-bat.

Notably in the 5th inning, Nic R. ran after a ball that was pitched well outside, he jumped up to reach it and made contact for 1 point and got on safe.  The win marks the first 10-run rule victory of the year.  Dalton R. and Nic R. both had solid games pitching as the Chix struggled to find a comfort zone in the batter's box.  Jenna P. was the bowler for the Chix, her first outing in the OCC.  She threw one wide and allowed 23 runs for an PA/IP of 4.000.  Megan P. showed some promise at the plate as she scored on several occasions.

The Penguins will be in action tomorrow against the Mustangs, the winner will take the lead in the OCC standings.

The Chix will be back in action later this week against the Mustangs.

Mustangs, Penguins, split season opening series

The Mustangs and Penguins played the inaugural series of the OCC, splitting it 1-1. The Mustangs won the first game of the series with a 17-16 win in a very defensive contest. The Penguins would comeback and win the next game by a score of 31-28. The new rules were on full display in both games as bowling had to be improved to prevent wides. Wides, one of the new rule additions, penalize a bowler for throwing wildly. A bowl that strays too far away from the wickets awards the batsmen a free point. Also wicket running has changed for the 2007 season. Batsmen can now be "Safe" if they are not between scoring zones when the wickets are hit. This allows them to continue running when the ball is put in play again. Nic R. has shown to be one of the better baserunners in the league, scoring points on a more consistent basis than any other player. Matt F. threw the first wide of the season in game 1, but it didn't prove to be the difference in the contest. In a bowling related matter, Dalton R. hit the first, and thus far, the only wicket of the season, awarding the Penguins a wicket point.

Controversy surrounded the second game when in the 9th inning the Penguins trailed the Mustangs by 4 points. Visibility was becoming an issue when Dalton R. hit a line drive that landed in a leafless bush. The Mustangs defense had difficulty locating the ball and Dalton R. scored 12 points. The ball was proven to be visible by Nic R. who managed to track the ball off the bat and saw where it landed, in a perfectly visible environment. The Mustangs threatened to turn the tables when Matt F. hit a ball at the bottom of the inning and the Penguins defense lost sight of it. After Matt F. scored 5 points, nearly completing their comeback, Nic located the ball and sprinted over to the wickets to record the game winning out.
